Proper Hydration Can Actually Extend Your Life, According to New Research

Proper Hydration Can Extend Your Life

Did you know that proper hydration can actually extend your life? In fact, by drinking enough water each day, you will enjoy a number of benefits, including improved mental processes and functioning, increased skin elasticity and healthier hair.

According to a new study published in the journal eBioMedicine, consuming enough water each day can decrease your chance of developing chronic diseases, dying early and being biologically older than your chronological age.

Water might be the simplest, most practical way to improve your health.

More than 50% of your body is made of water, which is also needed for multiple functions, including digesting food, creating hormones and neurotransmitters, and delivering oxygen throughout your body, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

However, about half of people worldwide don’t meet recommendations for daily total water intake.

Proper Hydration Can Extend Your Life

If you’re looking to keep your mind and body in tip-top shape, proper hydration is a great place to start. According to new research, adults with high serum sodium levels are more likely to have declining health.

The research team studied the data from over 11,000 participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study. The adults with serum sodium levels up to 146 milliequivalents per liter (high on the end of the spectrum), were more likely to have declining health and the chance of being biologically older than their chronological age, than those who had lower sodium levels. People with over 144 milliequivalents per liter of sodium had a 50 percent higher risk of being biologically older and a 21 percent increased risk of dying early.

“Decreased body water content is the most common factor that increases serum sodium, which is why the results suggest that staying well hydrated may slow down the aging process and prevent or delay chronic disease.”, says Natalia Dmitrieva, study author and a researcher in the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a division of NIH, in a news release.

This concludes that adequate hydration can help slow down the aging process and allow for a disease-free life.

So how much water do you need exactly?

If you’re trying to live a healthier life, it’s important to make sure you’re properly hydrated. Most people know that you should drink around 8 glasses of water per day. In fact, many doctors recommend drinking about 9 cups of water a day to help prevent kidney stones. Prolonged dehydration can lead to constipation, fatigue and headaches.

“Proper hydration supports the body’s many functions, and over time, taking in enough fluids may slow down aging and support a long, healthy life,” Dmitrieva said.

“The goal is to ensure patients are taking in enough fluids, while assessing factors, like medications, that may lead to fluid loss,” says Manfred Boehm, MD, study coauthor and director of the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine, in the news release.

Hydration plays a crucial role in everything from sports and exercise to weight loss, skin health and mental focus.

Staying hydrated is essential for your health, but sometimes it can be tough to get all the water you need in your daily life. You can boost your water intake by adding a glass to every meal or snack and even leaving a glass of water at your bedside in the morning so you drink it right when you wake up. Anchor the habit of drinking more water into your daily routine for a happy, healthier life.
