Lion’s Mane Mushrooms May Double Neurons Growth

Lion’s Mane Mushrooms may double neurons growth

Lion’s Mane mushrooms have long been used to promote brain health, as well as for their anti-inflammatory properties.

Recent studies also suggest that ingesting these mushrooms could make you smarter, by doubling neuron growth.

Lion’s Mane mushroom, a culinary and medicinal fungus with a long history in Asia, is gaining popularity in the West. This edible mushroom shows promise for boosting neuron growth, potentially benefiting those with memory decline.

People can eat these mushrooms or take them in the form of supplements. Research suggests that they may offer a range of health benefits, including reduced inflammation and improved cognitive and heart health. They may also have anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties, which may protect against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

What the studies say

While Lion’s Mane mushroom shows promise in early trials for boosting brain cell growth in neurodegenerative diseases, more research is needed before definitive conclusions can be drawn.

A new study from South Korea and Australia confirms these claims, showing that Lion’s Mane can improve the growth of cultured neurons.

They published their findings in the Journal of Neurochemistry. The study was funded by CNGBio Co, which farms organic mushrooms for medicinal purposes.

Lead author Professor Frédéric Meunier from the Queensland Brain Institute and former editor of the journal told Medical News Today: “It became clear that some of these compounds had potent activity when we realized that the length and number of branches dramatically increased”,  he said.

Twice the neuron growth from mushrooms

A study showed Lion’s Mane mushroom extract doubled the length and branching of rat embryo neurons, suggesting potential for brain cell growth. However, the specific molecules responsible for this effect remain unknown and require further research.

Should you take mushroom supplements?

“If [lion’s mane] mushroom extract is found to be beneficial for human memory, additional studies will need to investigate the appropriate dose and length of treatment needed to result in beneficial clinical effects in humans.”, said Dr. Kelly Johnson-Arbor.

Lion’s Mane mushrooms, though showing promise in animal studies for treating brain disorders, lack strong human trials. This study suggests they might not only improve memory but also regrow brain cells, but further research is needed to confirm these benefits and ensure safety for humans.

“A clinical trial is ongoing in Korea to test the efficacy of some of these molecules in a cohort of Alzheimer patients,” he added.
