But first, let’s take a virtual journey into the world of essential oils. Indulge your senses while exploring the variety of scents and their health promoting benefits.

Strong essences are kept in small bottles, according to an old saying. And it’s amazing how only a few drops of your favorite essential oil can do so much for your health and well-being. The essential oils are rising in popularity due to the increasing number of studies that suggest a positive correlation between aromatherapy and general well-being. On top, more people experienced their benefits, such as decreasing anxiety and boosting energy, cognition, improving mood and sleep disorders.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy and Essential Oils

Aromatherapy has been used for about 6,000 years for its health benefits, relaxation and mood enhancing properties.

Aromatherapy uses essential oils to improve psychological and physical well-being. Essential oils are concentrated oils made from flowers, petals, roots, seeds, fruit, barks of plants. Research shows that aromatherapy can offer positive benefits in common problems like anxiety, stress, poor sleep and more.

Essential oils are very concentrated extracts from plants, used for thousands of years in alternative medicine, cosmetic and perfumery fields because of the curative potential for the body, mind and spirit. They modulate mental functions and act as mood enhancers. Scents work through the nervous system, having impact on our health, mood and general well-being. And let’s face it, we love fragrances and that’s the reason we buy perfumes! In fact, most perfumes are an unique blend of essential oils and other ingredients.

Did I mention they can also be the perfect gift choice, both practical and nice? And that you can make a nice spa at home, a place to relax at the end of the day? Besides, there are a lot of essential oil fragrances and combinations you can consider, almost unlimited possibilities to delight your senses.

How essential oils can help you have a clean, fresh air

Diffusing essential oils is a sure way to purify your home air — but within a certain limit.

While some essential oils have shown some antimicrobial and antiviral effects, do not count on them to remove viruses and bacteria completely – some essential oils have shown some promising benefits, but more research is needed to support this fact.

Ultimately, long term, by using essential oils, you are making the air cleaner, cover unpleasant smells from cooking or pets.  They will give a fresh scent to your home, office or other space.

They can make your home environment so much more inviting and of course, essential oils have other benefits such us uplifting your mood and regulating your emotions. With some citrus or menthol oil you can feel more energetic, have better focus and mental concentration.  You can also breathe your way to better sleep with essential oils such as chamomille or lavender that promote better sleep and relaxation.

You can enjoy them daily with something as simple as an essential oil diffuser.  Those simple life pleasures!

You’ll get the smell of clean, fresh air, get a mood uplift and feel good in your personal space! Ultimately, you can improve the quality of your life and your home and office ambient.

What essential oils have shown some antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, as supported by research?

Pine, clove, eucalyptus, tea tree, frankincense, oregano, thyme, lavender and lemon have shown in studies some promising antimicrobial and antiviral effects. Still, more research is necessary.

Caution: Some essential oils are very strong even diluted and are not appropriate around pets and very small children. These include tea tree, oregano, thyme, eucalyptus, or clove.

Also, diffusing some essential oils is not recommended around those with asthma and certain other respiratory conditions.

Chamomille and lavender are more gentle scents and can be a safer substitute.

Review dilution guidelines and safety instructions for each essential oil before diffusing it in your home.

If yourself or your family members fall into one of these conditions, it’s best to ask for your doctor’s advice or of a qualified professional – in case of your furry friend, its vet.

And as a general rule, with essential oils, less is more, so only a few drops are enough in most cases.  Each oil has a therapeutic  limit, where the correct dose has wellness benefits, but an amount exceeding the therapeutic margin can be dangerous.

How to use essential oils

The easiest way is to buy a diffuser.

What is an essential oil diffuser?

A diffuser is a device that spreads tiny particles and the aroma of an essential oil into the air, diffusing a pleasant scent. Besides their potential therapeutic benefits, reviewed by research, they can make your home smell amazing and some devices with colorful lights even have a decorative function.

The most popular types of essential oil diffusers are ultrasonic and nebulizing diffusers. These can also help preserve best the essential oils properties.

Ultrasonic Diffusers – also known as cool mist or humidifying diffusers – are the most popular and work by creating a fine mist from essential oil and water. The electronic vibrations causes the oil to break into tiny particles, releasing the volatile components into the air where they remain suspended for a long time. These diffusers rely on the air currents to disperse, thus they usually cover smaller spaces compared to nebulizing diffusers.

Pros:

  • Popular due to price and ease of mainteinance.
  • They also act as a humidifier, so they are beneficial in winter or if you live in a place with drier climate.
  • They are silent and are appropriate even for night use.
  • Most diffusers have time function, so you can program it to run for a particular length of time.
  • Children friendly, as the oil concentration is low.
  • Usually have a safety off-switch when the water level is too low.
  • Some models have lights that change colors, making them good for decorative purposes too.

Cons:

  • The essential oil is dilluted compared to nebulizing diffusers, for example.
  • They also need water to function.
  • Not recommended to use citrus essential oils with this type of diffuser since they can potentially damage it.
  • For someone who is getting started with essential oils diffusers, an ultrasonic diffuser could be the best choice, as they offer good value for money.

Nebulizing Diffusers – also known as cold air diffusers. Basically, they work like a perfume atomizer, breaking down the essential oil into small particles by using an atomizer and releasing them into the air. They don’t need heat or water, thus they do not alter the properties of the oil through heating and disperse the entire oil into the air. The oil particles released are so tiny that they remain suspended in the air for a few hours.

Pros:

  • More professional type of diffusers.
  • Strong concentration of essential oils is released into the air.
  • Since the essential oils are not diluted, they are considered to have the best therapeutic effect.

Cons:

  • Louder than other diffusers – to prevent that, look for models that mention „silent” or „whisper quiet”.
  • They are a bit more expensive than most ultrasonic diffusers.
  • They add no humidity to the room, unlike ultrasonic diffusers.
  • Since the essential oil is not dilutted, a bigger quantity of oil is used, but the aroma is more intense.
  • Can release a quite high quantity of oil into the air in a short period of time unless they are put on a timer.
  • More difficult to use essential oils blends – you need to do the mix before putting in into the bottle.

The most popular devices are the ultrasonic diffusers, but nebulizing diffusers  are more professional due to the fact that they preserve the essential oil integrity and properties.  They have a stronger fragrance and are considered to have the best therapeutic effect if used properly. Also, you can use citrus oil without affecting the device and can scent bigger spaces.
