What will be hot in 2023? From smartwatches, home exercise gyms, virtual reality fitness technologies, plant-based diets, face yoga, and mental health, here are some of the latest workout trends and gadgets for the new year.

Wearable technologies

Wearable technology is the top fitness trend for 2022, according to a survey of 4,500 health and fitness professionals by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
The wearable market encompasses everything from devices aimed at diagnosing or monitoring health and wellness, to fitness trackers, sleep trackers, and more advanced smartwatches.
One of the most interesting recent developments is the ability of wearables to predict COVID-19 infections, which has led to high search volumes for the Oura Ring.
In mid-2020, the West Virginia University Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) and the Department of Medicine teamed up with Oura Health to create a platform that could predict COVID-19 infection three days in advance with 90% accuracy. Oura smart rings use an algorithm that is based on body temperature and the heart rate variability of your body and how it responds to exercise, stress and sleep.
Other smart wearables in this category include Amazon’s Halo Band and Whoop, as well as other fitness trackers and more advanced smartwatches (Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch, Samsung Watch).

Home gyms

Home gym fitness trends in 2023

Home gyms have been booming since the covid pandemic when people were forced to spend more time indoors.
Working out at home is a convenient way to get in shape. There are plenty of fitness options available such as treadmills, bikes, and resistance machines that can make your home gym as effective as an experience at the gym. They let you train at your own pace, and let you work out in the comfort and privacy of your home. These products offer the ability to stream live classes whenever it fits best for you and your family.
Design your home gym for strength training which is a popular type of workout – include barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, and/or medicine balls.

Virtual reality fitness

Depending on your budget, you can opt for more advanced devices – smart fitness mirrors such as Peloton, Mirror, or Tonal.
You don’t need much space for this type of equipment – it can easily fit into the corner of most living rooms. Home gyms are a great option for moderate use.
You can work out in the Alps with Peloton, play tennis with your favorite tennis player, or even ride a bicycle through Paris.
Whether you are riding on a Peloton bike or racing virtual animals, these workouts are designed to take your experience to the next level. The possibilities are endless, and you can choose from a variety of workouts.

Functional training

Functional fitness training is a term used to describe exercises that help you perform everyday activities more easily. Functional training improves strength and stability across a variety of movements, making your joints better protected and muscles more resistant to common injuries like strains. Functional workouts typically consist of compound exercises like squats, lunges, and deadlifts.
Aerobic classes are replaced by more personalized classes such as yoga, Pilates, strength training, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), or body weight training.

Intermittent fasting goes mainstream

If you want to eat healthfully but don’t want to follow a specific eating plan, consider intermittent fasting. It’s more flexible than other eating plans and may not require as much planning or preparation.
Intermittent fasting has become the number 1 most popular eating pattern in 2022 and beyond. Intermittent fasting is the practice of avoiding all food and beverages except water, coffee, and unsweetened tea for an extended period of time.
The most popular form of intermittent fasting is “time-restricted eating”. For example, “16:8” intermittent fasting consists of an 8 hour eating window during the day, followed by a 16-hour fasting window overnight and into the next day.
A smartwatch or fitness watch will be able to tell them what time they should start eating again based on the number of hours they’ve already fasted.

Plant-based diets

More and more people are interested in eating less meat, or no meat at all, for both health and ethical reasons.
Going plant-based doesn’t mean you are a vegetarian or vegan and never eat meat or dairy. Instead, you’re proportionately choosing more of your foods from plant sources.
And companies like Beyond Meat, Impossible Food, and Laird Superfood are making it easier than ever to go meatless. Ex The vegan Impossible Burger.

Self-care and mental health

Forest bathing prevents mental health issues

Mental health is a huge aspect of overall well-being. The majority of Gen Z (18-24 years old), who are extremely active on social media and very connected to the culture of self-care, listed mental health as their main reason for working out.
As our lives become more hectic, more competitive, and more stressful, we need tools to help us manage stress and anxiety.
Wearable devices can help identify people at risk for mental health conditions. Wearable devices are becoming increasingly popular as a way to monitor and track physical activity, listen to guided meditations, monitor sleep and eating patterns, and more.
The Japanese practice of forest bathing — or spending time in nature — is gaining more popularity as a way to lower stress and increase overall well-being. Forest bathing is an opportunity for people to take time out, slow down and connect with nature – simply put, it encourages people to spend more time outdoors.

Sleep

Sleeping pods for at work power naps

The sleep revolution is here. But there’s more to it than just getting a good night’s rest. People are placing more importance on sleep now, too. 35.3% of adults get less sleep than they should, and loss of sleep has been linked to health problems like depression, obesity, and diabetes.
Organizations like Google, Mercedes-Benz, and HuffPost now offer sleep pods for employees to take power naps at work.
Fitness and health tech devices such as Oura rings are designed to improve your sleep, too.

Exercise recovery

Exercise recovery equipment such as massage guns and vibrating rollers offer many benefits such as shorter recovery times, loosening up tight knots, and delivering pulses to specific areas of your body to loosen up tight muscles and shorten recovery times.
Research published in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy discovered that foam rollers can aid recovery times. The best products will be those that combine rest with exercise recovery.

Face yoga

Thanks to celebrity face yoga instructor Koko Hayashi, face yoga is growing in popularity as more people learn about its benefits, which include easing stress, improving skin health and tension, and reducing worry. It’s designed to improve skin conditions, reduce puffiness, relax tension, and prevent wrinkles.

  1. It’s interesting to see just how prevalent home gyms have become in recent years, especially following the pandemic. I definitely see that becoming more commonplace, too, as we head into 2023.
