Vitamin D can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes

A new study shows that people with prediabetes can lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 15% by taking vitamin D supplements.

Four in ten adults are believed to be vitamin D deficient, according to Dr. Elena Zamora, assistant professor of medicine with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. The risk is higher especially in winter.

Individuals with prediabetes have blood sugar levels higher than what is considered healthy but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. It is a common condition — about 1 in 3 American adults have prediabetes, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.


Systemic review and meta-analysis have found that individuals with prediabetes could lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 15% by supplementing with vitamin D, according to a review published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Anastassios G. Pittas, chief of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at Tufts Medical Center and a co-author of the paper about the review, led a study published in 2019 that followed participants at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes who took 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily. According to the study, there was a 12% relative risk reduction, Dr. Pittas told Medical News Today.


Vitamin D supplements may reduce the risk of diabetes


The researchers decided that to conduct a systemic review and meta-analysis, which provides a summary of findings from multiple studies using the same data.

The researchers combined data from three randomized control trials to show that vitamin D supplements may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This meta-analysis was better able to show a connection between vitamin D supplementation and a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes than each individual randomized controlled trial was separately.

That resulted in 3,835 citations from databases PubMed and Embase and 270 records from Three trials met the eligibility criteria and had a median follow-up of three years.

There was also a low frequency of adverse effects like kidney stones or hypercalcemia.

Another 2022 study showed that intensive lifestyle modification resulted in a 58% lower risk, and taking the drug metformin resulted in a 31% lower risk of developing diabetes.


What are the safe levels of vitamin D?


“Very-high-dose vitamin D therapy might prevent type 2 diabetes in some patients but may also cause harm”, according to an editorial published the Annals of Internal Medicine. According to the study, the highest levels of vitamin D intake “that carries no appreciable risk for adverse health effects, is set by all government agencies at 100 mcg (4,000 IU).”

It seems that on the long term, higher doses of vitamin D (10.000 U.I.) taken daily for one to three years reported increased risk for adverse effects.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the recommended daily amount of vitamin D is 400 international units (IU) for children up to age 12 months, 600 IU for people ages 1 to 70 years, and 800 IU for people over 70 years.  However, 1,000 to 2,000 IU per day of vitamin D from a supplement is considered safe for most healthy individuals.

Besides the safety issues, a high majority of supplements are not regulated by authorities and consumers may choose supplements with a poor quality.

Individuals should weigh the benefits and risks of taking vitamin D supplements with their doctors.
